My 87 year old grandmother has recently been diagnosed with a lung cancer terminal stage 4! She's not coping well having never been ill very understandable, she has deteriorated so much in the space of 8weeks.

She doesn't want to hear the ins and outs of what the future holds, she wants treatment and wants to still be for resus, she doesn't want to hear the whole story but wants to know why she's not feeling better after antibiotics to try and treat an infection but doesn't want to hear that she can't have chemo until there is no infection..it feels twisted and cruel and that's without what the actual cancer is doing to her, my family and I are trying to manage a one to one care for her so no care homes etc!!

Did I also mention, I'm a qualified nurse, I am also listed as NOK and I am the only person who has access to all of her tests etc on her permission and truly am the only one who knows exactly where this is going!! so that's why I'm not sleeping

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and it sounds like you're trying to do everything you can for your grandmother.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the lung cancer group, as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as your grandmother, and also the supporting someone with incurable cancer group, where you can share your worries and emotions with others who are supporting someone with an incurable diagnosis.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your grandmother's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
