What to do with my hair?

Hi everyone, I shaved my head due to chemo related hair loss and this may sound silly but I can't bring myself to throw the hair away and I'm not really sure what to do with it? I loved my hair and I think I'm too emotionally attached to it right now.

I was wondering if anyone would be happy to share what they did with theirs?

  • Hi  and welcome to Macmillan and the chat forum.

I was lucky enough not to lose my hair when I had chemo, but for many of us our hair is an important part of our identity so I can appreciate that losing your hair would be a difficult thing to go through.

You haven’t mentioned what type of cancer you have had, but it may be that in one of our specific cancer related groups you could connect to others who’ve been through the same experience and can share what they did when they shaved their heads. I’d be happy to link you to the most appropriate group if you’d like me to do that.

In time, you may feel able to donate your hair to a charity which makes wigs, for example for children and young people who have also lost their hair through treatment.

There is some information here from Cancer Research UK about hair loss and its emotional impact

The link below provides information on how to donate your hair if you’d like to consider doing that in the future

Your emotional attachment to your hair is understandable, and hopefully other members might come along to let you know how they dealt with this.

If you need any further help in navigating the community, please just ask.
