Self Employment and Cancer

Hi

Has anyone else become self employed after being diagnosed with cancer?

After being diagnosed with mixed rare sarcoma  a year ago and a hysterectomy to remove cancer cells, I now have complications with leg pain and mobility and awaiting  further doctors and hospital apts.

Has anyone took the leap of faith and took the self employment route instead of returning to work?

I really want to make a little business for myself but worried I am unable to manage work load and clients.

Any advice would be appreciated

  • Hello Vicky (

Slightly different but I have been Self Employed for over 30 years and living with a cancer diagnosis for over 4 years.

Yes I have the advantage of having a client base already when my diagnosis started and yes I have staff to cover for me if I am not about (these days it's me being on holiday!). I run an accountancy practice and we do have deadlines to meet but we've never missed any yet!

I have Prostate Cancer and it's never stopped me from working and it's never got in the way of meeting clients or being in the office and working for myself I don't work 9 - 5 - I work when it suits me.

I would say give it a go - you never know how it will go until you try something. Depending on what you do you can manage your hours to fit in with your business/clients and at first don't take on any clients who may be daunting or too big. There's always people about willing to help - accountants, solicitors and there's plenty of advice about on google but don't believe everything you read there. If it helps, click on my name or avatar and see how I have managed with my diagnosis (and life in general).

Happy to help if you need to chat.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Millbob

Thank you so much for your advice and your story. I really appreciate your honesty. I guess I am scared to take the leap as I do not want to let clients down or fail. I had a successful business over 10 years ago, but a great deal has changed in the world since then.

I have been at a crossroads for some time , managing pain and family life, but I loved being my own boss before.

I will do some more research , but thank you
