Any advice on antibiotics and aggressive chemo following a hospital stay?

Hey all, I've just found this group via Google, so thanks to the founders and contributors.

I am concerned as my Mother is almost half way through her rather aggressive Chemo and Immunotherapy treatment for her Triple Negative Breat Cancer (Carboplatin and Paklitaxil weekly with fortnightly Immunotherapy infusions).  She has spent the last two nights in hospital on IV Antibiotics after getting a UTI and fever.  She will be released tomorrow with oral antibiotics for the next week or more, and they've said her weekly Chemo scheduled day after tomorrow will go ahead regardless. Knowing of the importance of gut health, this feels completely counterintuitive to me, a lot for her body to go through.

I'd love to know if anyone has been in this situation and how you faired if so? Any advice or shared experience, warnings? much appreciated. Love and deepest care to you all through your own journeys x

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I had treatment for TNBC 4 years ago. Fortunately, I found the chemo (immunotherapy wasn't given back then) do-able so don't have any experience of being on antibiotics while undergoing treatment to share with you.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join and post in the triple negative breast cancer and main breast cancer groups as you'll then connect directly with others who have had the same treatment as your mum.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
