Mum recent diagnosis

My mum has just been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer that has spread to her liver. She’s been told something about both receptors being positive or negative. I can’t remember which but it was bad news. She has been told surgery and chemo won’t work, but she can be given chemo to extend her life. I’m so shocked and painfully heartbroken at the same time. We thought she’d get a mastectomy and chemo and be okay. We weren’t expecting this news at all. How do we process this? And how can I be there for her?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I'm sorry to read about the news you and your mum have just received. It sounds like an incredibly hard time for you both.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend a couple for you to join. The first is the secondary breast cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others whose breast cancer has spread elsewhere. Joining that group will give you the opportunity to talk to others who are in a similar position as your mum.

Then, if you are your mum's carer, can I suggest that you join the carers only group where you can share your worries and emotions with others who are caring for a loved one living with cancer. If you're not her carer then the family and friends group offers the same degree of support as the carers only group.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you feel up to it, it would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    Sending virtual (((hugs)))
