I teach horse riding and am 12 months post radiotherapy, one of the children has come down with chickenpox, should I be worried about the chance of getting shingles? I had chickenpox as a child.

  • Yes, unfortunately you can only get shingles if you’ve had chickenpox because they are caused by the same varicella-zoster virus, which stays dormant in your body after chickenpox and can reactivate later in life, more so if your immune system is weakened in any way.
I had 10 zaps of radiotherapy in June 2014 to every lymph-node and my bone marrow as part of my first Allograft (donor) Stem Cell Transplant……
Unfortunately I was told on Christmas Eve 2014 that the graft had failed…… I went back in Oct 2015 for a second Stem Cell Transplant…… my Consultant said that the 10 zaps I had back in 2014 were still active in my body reducing my immune system significantly and this was used as part of my preparation for my transplant.
I would be getting advice from your GP or your hospital team.
