Struggling to come to terms with mum's diagnosis

Hello, I'm a new member.

I learned that my mum had been given a terminal diagnosis a little over a week ago and I'm struggling to deal with it. I feel terribly selfish for even posting this as I'm not the one affected.

She was diagnosed over a year ago with a rare type affecting the womb area and underwent chemo for a while and was told in October there was no trace of it, then after experiencing pain late December she was given a scan and was told it had come back and there was nothing to be done. The prognosis is max one year. She is coping commendably , whereas I can't take my mind off it to the point where it's causing me anxiety, I'm barely eating and can't sleep properly. What makes it worse is that I don't really have any support network. I started CBT therapy last week which I'm hoping will help.

I guess I am here just looking to engage with others in a similar situation.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I'm really sorry to read about your mum's terminal diagnosis.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who are in a similar situation.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

    Sending virtual (((hugs)))

  • Just to say the Macmillan helpline is amazing. They can provide you with a listening ear and you can also ask questions that may be on your mind. As well as support they can let you know of any services available in your local area. Thinking of you.
