I have made an application to this scheme to see if I can get some help to keep myself in employment . I wonder if anyone has any experiences of using this scheme? I am basically looking at having a "work buddy" who can carry out any tasks related to my job that my disability prevents me from doing . In my case it is operating critical machinery and driving Fork Lift Trucks.
I was / still am facing losing my job due to ill health capability due to my cancer diagnosis but this might be a way to keep myself working . I have always wanted to finish my working life on my terms and see working as a big part of keeping things normal as I go through my treatment.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.
Hi Pitman1961
I noticed that you haven’t had any replies yet, and as I’m retired I’m afraid I can’t help with any relevant advice.
I noticed you haven’t joined any of the groups which specifically relate to your cancer, so you may want to do that and re post there to widen your audience to see if there is anyone with your type of cancer and treatment who might have faced the same issues and have experience of this government scheme.
If you’d like to do that, I’d be happy to give you the link to a relevant group. Good luck with finding out some more information.

Hi Sarah , thank you that would be very helpful and appreciated. I have only been using the forums for a few weeks and would definitely like to get more actively involved .
I have been very busy with other stuff in my life recently but that is no excuse really and I would like to listen to other peoples experiences with cancer and perhaps be able to throw in a few things myself .
I have been under my consultant at Christies since 2017 having first been diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015 . I have also had prostate cancer and am currently being treated for cancer in my lungs/chest area as well as a brain tumour for which I had radiotherapy in August last year . Throughout my journey I have always tried to stay positive am striving to get back to work to try to re establish some normality into my life even if it means having to use the Access to work scheme where I basically have someone doing most of the tasks my disability prevents me from doing. I feel so very frustrated that I can’t do things I used to take for granted but try to look on it as also giving someone else a chance to get a job if my scheme application gets approved .
Apologies for the rather long post .
Thank you ,
Peter xx , my real name :-)
Hi Peter
Oh my goodness, what a lot you have gone through and are still going through. It’s really admirable that you are actively trying to find a way to keep working considering everything going on in your life. Your positive attitude is remarkable!
I’m going to give you a few links here of the groups I think could be helpful for you, which you can join if you’d like to by clicking on the “join group” banner which you’ll see going across the page of each one. Just click the links I’ve made to access each one. Once you join a group, you will be able to put up a new post to introduce yourself.
You might find it useful too to put some information about your cancer and treatments into your own profile so that others can better understand your situation at a glance. To do this, just click on your own name, and complete your profile information, remembering to press “save” before you exit the page. Others will then be able to read this if they click on your name as they can for anyone in the community who has completed their own profile information. If you click on my name, for example, it gives my cancer story and details of my treatment and surgeries.
As your initial diagnosis was kidney cancer, I’ll give you the link to that support group first.
You haven’t said whether your other cancers are primary cancers or have been caused by a spread from your original kidney cancer, but these groups could hopefully be useful for you
You can join any or all of them to chat with others and as you’ve said you want to be more actively involved in the community, this would be an excellent way of doing that.
I hope you can find out more about the scheme from others, but at the very least you’ll certainly be able to chat with others in similar situations which can hugely important for us all.
Please keep in touch Peter, and let us know how you’re getting on. I hope you’ll find the online community very helpful and supportive.
