So afraid

I've started chemo this week for bowel cancer. The IV drip was awful and I could barely walk after it. My chemo tabs are sending shooting pains throughout my torso at nighttime. Like electric shocks that are sore. Hoping to see my consultant tomorrow. Has anyone experienced this and has it turned out ok?

  • Have faith. The pain is a sign the bad cells are being killed. I’m sure you will be better soon….

  • I am sorry you are e periencing problems with the tablets. I would call the 24 hour help line for clinucal input. I am judt about to start my therapy and will definitely be

calling up if I have any doubts about side

    effects. Can i ask why

you said the IV was awful?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I had chemotherapy for breast cancer a few years ago.

As cancer is treated with different types of chemotherapy, I'm going to recommend that you join and post in the bowel cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

You should have been given a direct line to your chemotherapy team in case you're worried about anything. Have you spoken to them and explained the pain that you're in? The hotline number is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so please give it a call if you're still experiencing these pains.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • I took a reaction to it. My feet and hands went into spasms. I was the only one it happened to. They said it was very unusual for this to happen. Everyone else got on totally fine. Best wishes with your treatment.

  • Ok. Thank you Anne. Il join that group. Yes I contacted the helpline and I'm hoping to see my consultant tomorrow to maybe reduce my strength. The doctor on the phone says he wasn't concerned but last night was the third night in a row, so it def can't be normal. Thanks for your guidance to the right section

  • Hi Clare

I hope all has settled now and your team have been able to reassure you. What is the name of the Chemo you are being given though the IV? I have had Oxaliplatin and this one can cause neuropathy, while having it it can change your voice and give you wobbly legs. I will now be given an antihistamine when having it and they will slow the drip down.

Going forward your DR will put support in place for you.

    Take care Jennie

  • Hi Jennie,

Yes that's the one I got through IV drip. My voice did sound different too, well I thought it did. I'm seeing my consultant today to get a new way going forward. I'm going to ask for anti spasm tablets too as my spasms were bad. It has just completely messed up my mental health. I trust nothing at the min. I feel like a different person, horrible
