Hi...Had my nephrostomy last week..nowhere near as bad as I was expecting!  The hardest bit is trying to get comfortable in bed but I bought a v pillow and am getting there.

My question is what is the best way now of showering?  I gwt my supplies from Manfred Saur but I can't see anything which helps with keeping the dressing dry?

  • Hi

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and it's great to read that your nephrostomy wasn't nearly as bad as you were expecting.

You might be best to post this question in the cervical cancer group, which I can see you're a member of, as you'll then connect directly with others who may be able to tell you how they kept their dressing dry.

When you have time, it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi

I’m glad it wasn’t as bad as you were anticipating! Hopefully it will become easier to get comfy in your bed once you adapt to the tube and not lying on it through the night.

I’ve not used your supply company before but have you called them up to ask if they can supply an appropriate product? There are special dressings(single use) to pop over the site to keep it dry in the shower.  They are called Aquaguard. I don’t need these myself as my stoma bags can get wet in the shower but obviously it’s very important to keep the nephrostomy site dry to avoid any risk of infection.

I would have thought that you would be able to have these on prescription as happens with stoma supplies but confess I don’t know what you’re entitled to have supplied. You can buy Aquaguard online on the major retailer most of us use for everything (!) but I’m not supposed to put a link here unfortunately. It’s not something that comes up often in the cervical group to be honest, but there may be a member there who can help if you ask your question there too.

Hope this helps and that you cope ok with this big change to your life.

    Sarah xx
