So my mil had a ct scan on Monday due to various health issues and on Tuesday ended up in a&e has she is unable to keep anything down it was there the doctor told us there was a mass on her left Lung and also a lump the size of a golfball under her armpit she is 72 for reference she was admitted to hospital and has had a biopsy taken from the lump under her armpit she is still unable to eat or swallow so has had an ng tube in she has since had another mri and we have been told there’s cancer in the liver and mets on the skull but not the brain I know I can’t get a definite answer has everyone’s different but is she likely to be offered any treatments ? It’s obviously advanced she’s such a lovely woman who will fight until the end she has been put on a syringe driver today and been given Midazolam has she’s having involuntary arm and leg movements it seems like such a long time for biopsy results to come back.
  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your Mother in Law's ongoing diagnosis.

There is no way that anyone on this platform will be able to give you a clean answer to your question..... "is she likely to be offered any treatments ?"....... only her clinical team will be able to answer this.

The way forward will depend on what type of cancer this is and as to how much it has progressed...... but I was stage 4 back in late 2013 with 2 types of very rare Lymphoma and I am still here.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer or cancer support challenges can help a lot.

This New to Community area is like our reception desk where we try to direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms)……… so once you have a clear picture you can have a look through this link Cancer Specific Groups you will find all our dedicated cancer support groups listed.

These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.

As for the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your Mother in Law and indeed yourself and the rest of the family you may benefit from joining and posting in our……..

       Family and Friends

Carers only (if you are her caregiver)

Supporting someone with incurable cancer (If this is applicable)

……support groups where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

It is an emotional time supporting family so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions.

The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
