Hi, I don’t really know what I’m doing as this is the first time I’ve reached out for help.
A few weeks ago my mum got some bad news that the cancer she had just ten months ago had returned
What followed a week after was the worst news I have ever received in my life.. mums cancer is extremely rare and is not curable. To then be told that she may only have months left to live.
Mum will start chemo on Tuesday and will have it every week until the end. I feel like we have run out of time. I’m so heartbroken.
I am absolutely devastated and am really struggling with how to cope. I literally don’t know how il get through it. I’ve never known heartache like this before. I’m scared and not ready to lose my mum. She is only 64 years old.
Is there anyone who has been through similar or is going through similar that can offer any words of support? Can someone help me understand how I will deal with the loss of my mum?
My heart physically hurts every day and I am really struggling with knowing how to cope.
I have a 4 year old son and a 12 year old daughter who I am desperately trying to put a front on to but I am really struggling more and more as each day passes.
Thank you for your time
Hi HelsBels86 and a warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.
A cancer diagnosis in the family like this can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' support challenges can help you a lot.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you look to join and post in our…….
……. support group.
This group is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same support journey.
As for the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your mum and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our……
Supporting someone with incurable cancer
……. support groups where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.
To connect with a group click on the “Bold Italic Links” I have created above …… then once the group page opens click in the [Black - Click to Join - Banner] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.
When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.
You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
It is an emotional time supporting family so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions.
The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community ((hugs))
Thank you so much. I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. I have started to look into some of things you have mentioned above and have joined the forums you suggested too.
It’s so nice to feel I have the support already.
My emotions are all over the place.
I can’t thank you enough
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
