Has anyone been prescribed anxiety meds to help them negotiate the emotional roller coaster that comes with this diagnosis, and if so did they help a little?

  • Hi

Yes, I was prescribed anxiety medication just before my original diagnosis and was advised to stay on them during treatment. I found they definitely helped me in taking the edge off my anxiety and being calmer-I was suffering from anxiety anyway.
They take time to get into your system, so it wasn’t an instant fix for me.

Have a chat with your gp and they will be able to assess if you need them.

  • I got sleeping tablets because I found if I got a good nights sleep I could cope with the next day. I did get anxiety ones as well but haven’t taken any yet. I was told not to take them day before op as not good with anaesthetic.
I found if I got through one appointment then put it out of my mind , lived life as normal until the next one I could forget about it. Now I’ve had lumpectomy and sentinel node removal which was fine, feel great, no pain, very little bruising, I’ll forget about it until next hospital visit. I just keep repeating worrying won’t change anything and that does help. Good luck x

  • I was already on anxiety tablets when I was diagnosed a year ago. I honestly never felt they particularly helped before or after the diagnosis. I'm not even sure how you can tell though. I was only on a low dose and my GP said I could increase them if I wanted. One of the weird things with such meds is that one of the side effects is anxiety and depression! Isn't that what they're supposed to help with?

Anyway, after a few months and having to take so many new medications related to cancer, I decided to stop taking the anxiety tablets. I stop others too that I was already on, simply to I didn't have to take so many every day. It makes you wonder how necessary some medication is.

Sorry I'm not helping much! I think the best way to negotiate the emotional roller coaster is to make sure you have lots of people to talk and let off steam to.
