Hi,
So this is my first time posting, and I guess I’m looking for advice/guidance. A bit of backstory, I’ve had quite a lot of experience of cancer within my family. My dad was diagnosed with stage 3 bladder and prostate cancer 3 years ago, but thankfully is fully in remission post bladder and prostate removal. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time (stage 2) four/five years ago, where she had a lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed. After the operation, we were told she was in the all clear. Last year however, the breast cancer came back and she had a (L) mastectomy. The wound didn’t heal however and she had to have a skin graft, and now the skin graft isn’t healing. Today, we just found out that she tested positive for the BRCA 2 gene. Im 22, and her only child (daughter). Im going to contact my GP in the morning to start the process of being referred to genetic testing.
I guess what I’m asking, how do I cope with this? Im afraid of sounding selfish as its my mum going through it, but the thought of cancer following me for the rest of my life scares me so much. I feel so much anger, anger that my parents have both had to go through this, but I’m angry for myself aswell - is this normal or am I being dramatic?
apologies if this sounds like a sob story, that wasn’t my intention at all. I just hope anybody whos going through something similar can offer some advice.
thank you x
