Looking for hope

My partner has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer that’s spread to his lungs, he’s 51 and it’s incurable and we’ve been told he needs palliative chemotherapy. This has all happened in the space of 4 weeks.

The Dr said they will try and manage the cancer and that some people can live for years with treatments, but I’m terrible at googling things and have read too much and have scared myself to death

We are in shock and disbelief and are trying to cling onto hope, but I’m struggling at the moment and know I need to be strong for my partner but it’s a-lot to process

  • Hello OurLas, I'm very sorry you find yourself here. Although I've had two separate cancers neither were bowel and I suggest you search for the bowel cancer community on here where you can ask questions and receive replies, help and advice from others who have also had bowel cancer and therefore direct experience of tests and treatments.

In the meantime please stay away from google, it's impossible to know whether information you find there is accurate, correct or up to date and, as you've discovered, you can scare yourself witless with some of the information you find there but can't rely on. There is reliable information and help to be found on reputable websites such as MacMillan, Cancer Research etc. which can be relied upon for accurate and reliable information and I'd suggest you look there for more info..

I wish your husband and you all the best for successful treatment.

    Derek.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I'm very sorry to read about your partner's recent cancer diagnosis.

As you know, the online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you also join the bowel cancer and secondary lung cancer groups, which are great place to ask questions and share experiences with others who have the same type of cancer as your partner.

Another group which you might find helpful is the supporting someone with incurable cancer group where you'll connect directly with others in a similar situation to yourself to discuss your emotions and get support.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your partner's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
