My husband had an oesophagectomy in 2020 and up until two months ago had been cancer free. The cancer is back at the oesophageal site with spread to his spine. He's had radiotherapy to his spine for his back pain and has just started IV chemotherapy with daily tablets to take at home. He complains of a constant bad taste in his mouth which is affecting his appetite. His breath doesn't smell. I would be grateful for any suggestions on what might help him. Thank you.

  • Hi

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I haven't had the same type of cancer as your husband, when I was undergoing chemotherapy everything tasted horrible. I found that eating spicy food meant that I could actually taste the food and, strangely, pineapple always tasted as it should!

I'm going to recommend that you also join and post in the oesophageal cancer group, as you'll then connect directly with others who will have had the same type of treatment as your husband.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
