Hi all,
my father got diagnosed with larynx cancer that has spread to his neck lymph nodes stage 4, he is currently having chemotherapy and has been offered radiotherapy which he has refused because of the side effects. I just wanted to reach out to anyone that has a loved one going through this as it’s really hard, I go to see my dad every night and do everything he needs me to do but recently he has been so angry and been really hard to be around as I am scared of talking because he just gets angry and shouts. I have tried to speak to him about it but he just says it’s the chemo. I love my dad so much and hate seeing him suffer but I am at a loss of what I can do for him to make this easier for him. One minute he wants to talk about cancer and then he goes mad telling me to stop talking about it. I am so worried for his mental health and how much he is deteriorating but I can’t bring it up to him as he will just get mad. If anyone can help me I would be very greatful. Thank you for taking the time to read my post x
Hi Becci05 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I'm sorry to read that your dad is struggling with his cancer diagnosis.
It's natural that you want to know how best to support him so I'm going to recommend that you join either the carers only group, if you are your dad's carer, or the family and friends group, if you're not. Both groups are great places to share experiences and get support from others who have someone they love living with cancer.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
You might also find this information from Macmillan on how to talk to someone with cancer helpful.
It would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
