Mental health struggles

Hi all,

I’m really struggling with my mental health at the moment.

I’ve been supporting my mum through her chemotherapy for an advanced form of cancer, I’ve seen her go through the motions including a range of symptoms and hair loss - now seems to be the worst point (she’s at the end of 8 sessions). I’ve been the only person in my family to go with her to chemotherapy sessions to keep her company for the 9 hour days. I’m also the only family member to care for her at home.

I’ve not been well at all, struggling with infections as a result of not looking after myself. I’m now off work recovering from a procedure and I’m so depressed and feel like I have no control. I feel really alone, my family aren’t being supportive including my siblings who don’t live too far away, and there’s a road ahead of more treatment that I will have to help with.

All while I’m trying to keep my demanding, unsupportive full time job and pay the bills. It just feels a lot.

not sure if anybody has any advice or similar experience, I’d appreciate anything at this point.

  • Hello

Welcome to the Cancer Chat forum. i see you are also a member of other forums which I assume you use whilst helping mum through her treatment. You have been "through the mill" with your mum and your own issues and work.

I suggest you give the helpline a call - it's for family members and anyone affected by cancer. There are some fantastic people there and as you have been brave enough to put your worries down here - it's only a telephone call away to get that little bit of extra help you need.

    0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days, a week) I hope this helps.

Best wishes to you and mum - Brian
