Hiya - Husband is recently diagnosed with Terminal Lung Cancer, but potential long survival  - are we obligated to tell a life insurance provider - I don't want to poke the dragon if I dont' have to, but can't have them refuse payout if we don't tell them?  Thank you

  • ps - I've no paperwork - lost a long time ago - but the DD is still being taken out, so can't see the T&Cs.

  • Hi   and welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis.

Can I suggest that you call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00.

This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support….. but more importantly financial guidance where you can chat this through with one of our financial guidance team.

A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' support challenges can help a lot.

As you see the Community is divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your husband you may benefit from joining and posting in our Carers only  and Supporting someone with incurable cancer support groups where you will connect with others navigating the exact same support challenges.

To connect with a group click on the “Bold Italic Links” I have created above then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)

You can then put up your own post when you’re ready by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and support all the family.

Please do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Hello JBBTT, I'm very sorry to hear of your husband's diagnosis.

In addition to the sound advice provided by Thehighlander, I suggest first of all that you simply contact the life insurance company who are still taking the DDs and tell them you have lost the paperwork - they should be able to provide you with duplicates easily. You can then check any conditions thoroughly.

In any event, if life insurance was taken out when there were no health problems (or any problems that did exist at the time were declared and accepted by the insurer) it is unlikely they will be able to discontinue cover, charge more or even require notification if health conditions subsequently change and cover should continue provided the premiums continue to be paid. Some life policies however might provide for a lump sum to be paid immediately in the event of certain defined health conditions being diagnosed in place of death benefit and the policy will show if this is applicable, however this is unlikely if it was many years since the policy started. If this is the case it will be for you to decide what you want to do.
