Hello,

My husband has been transferred to a dermatologist for his mole by his gp who was concerned about it.

He saw a dermatologistast week through 2ww. First dermatologist said she thought it looks fine but she would do wide excision just to be precaution. Then she asked her senior dermatologist to come and had a look. He said from his experience he is not concerned about it and would like to wait another 3 months to have a check again. They took photo of his mole. I tried to get them biopsy his mole but the senior dermatologist insisted its unnecessary.

We got back home and went through my husband's old photo and found that the mole has been changing in size and colour for the past few years. I have tried contacting the dermatologist secretary (they told us we can call them if there is any concerns or symptoms) but no one answered.

I would like to know if we get it biopsy privately and if its Melanoma, can we transfer back to Nhs? Is it going to slow down his treatment from the nhs? Do we have to start at the beginning again?

Thank you so much. At this point it's really tempted to get it biopsy privately.

Sorry English is not my first language and all this nhs process is very new to me.

  • Hi worrier123, sorry to hear you have this worry regarding your husbands mole. I can understand your concern and why you feel a biopsy may be necessary.

The quick answer to your question is yes, you can still have treatment under the NHS if a biopsy is done privately. If you do pay for a private consultation, they may still think that a biopsy is not necessary, and very often the same doctors work in the private sector that work for the NHS. The real benefit of going private, is your husband will be seen quickly, so if they think a biopsy is needed, it will be done sooner than a NHS referral.

  • Hello Chelle,

Thank you so much for your reply. We are contacting his dermatologist for a referral to a private one. Just so difficult to contact them. X
