Hi, My names G 28 Brit currently living in Australia.

I've recently received news from back home that my step-mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Chemo and surgery are not an option. She and my dad have been together for 10+ and I lived with them partly before I left the UK 5 years ago. They're planning to tie the knot in December which has broke my heart. I feel helpless and guilty. Helpless I understand as I’ve lost people to this battle before. But the guilt feels overpowering. I’m currently 10,500 miles and unable to leave the county pending application processing.

I want to make sure they are both equipped with the resources available help, advice and recommendations welcome.

  • Hi  and sorry to hear about your step-mum, this is a challenge time for you all. It must be very hard to be so far away and not to be on hand to help them out.

It’s important that both your dad and step-mum connect in with any local support cancer platforms so do check to see if they have any Local Macmillan Support in their area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and give support to all the family.

Also highlight the Macmillan Support Line to you dad and you step-mum. This is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

I see that you have also posted in our Family and Friends group. This is a good place to connect with others who are dealing with the same challenges.
