Hi, my dad is 83 so a good age but has throat and liver cancer. I'm noticing a weekly deteriation now and he's losing his appetite (advised he's slightly hungry but when he eats a couple of spoons says he's full)? I've read that this is the cancer as it releases a hormone?
He is starting to lose weight, looks pale, tired etc and I think he is slowly dying. He has palliative care (not at his house) and I call him.every day and visit a couple of times a week. He is fiercely independent and I'm looking at getting a camera installed so I can keep an eye on him as he does not want to live with me but it's too early for a hospice etc as they advised my dad needs to be very close to dying. I feel heartbroken. thanks xx
Hello Lisa and a warm welcome to the Cancer Chat Forum
I am so sorry to read of your dad's issues, yes 83 is a good age and I can fully understand your worries for him. As you are aware the Community is divided up into various forums/chat rooms and I can see you have already joined the Liver cancer forum.
As there are a number of different types of cancer that can affect the throat I would suggest you join the most appropriate group as "throat cancer" can be any one of these Head and neck cancer forum and the Oesophageal cancer forum and the Larynx cancer forum .
In a situation like you are in with your dad it's hard to keep your emotions in check and you may feel that joining either the Carers only forum or Emotional support forum will help you with your own situation.
I hope the above is of some help and that you have the strength to give your dad the help he needs even though he is still independent and lives by himself.
If I can do anything else for you in navigating the Community please don't hesitate to message me.
Best wishes - Brian.
