Travel Insurance

Ok here goes! I am trying to get annual travel insurance just for Spain.

Tried numerous companies but the prices are horrendous or they won't quote at all.

I have a stoma from bowel cancer operated on in 2019. Numerous scans/blood tests showed cancer had been cleared completely until

in 2021 a tumour was found in the liver. Operation to remove was successful and the surgeon tells me it has been removed completely following

CT scan results/blood tests.

When I try to complete the online insurance quotes it allows me to confirm the bowel cancer has been cleared but when I add the liver cancer there is no option

to state it has been cleared and the premiums treble!

Can anyone recommend an insurer for these circumstances please?

  • Hi  a holiday to Spain sounds amazing but as you are experiencing getting affordable Travel Insurance can be a challenge and at times the price quoted could be higher than the cost of the holiday and some people do find that no Insurance is being offered.

I had to be 2 years in remission from my type of blood cancer before I could get any price but these decisions are often all down to cancer types, treatment, prognosis and the resulting risk factor put on by the insurers risk assessment - I am very open to serious infections due to a reduced immune system so this is seen as a high risk factor for insurers.

Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.

It is actually more effective to call a few insurers directly as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.

Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of you developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.

I am not allowed to recommend any companies but do have a look through the Recommended Travel Insurance 2023 in our Travel insurance group as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are.

You can also look through all the individual members of posts in the group as well.

I do hope you can get cover.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Unfortunately, as you've found, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you've had a cancer diagnosis so can I recommend that you join us over in the travel insurance group where you'll find recommendations from others who have been successful. Once you've joined look for the thread called 'recommended travel insurance' as this is where the majority of recommendations are.

Most people say that it's best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also, sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.

    I hope this helps

  • I have had insurance with a company called Insurancewith I understand that the woman who created the company had cancer and was so upset at the cost of insurance she created the company I can’t guarantee that you will get insurance but I had Europe insurance for about £80 I had previously had travel insurance with the post office but as soon as I told them I had breast cancer they immediately cancelled my insurance so would not recommend you approaching them. It has been 18 months since I was diagnosed have had a lumpectomy, lymph nodes removed, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and take letrozole daily so far so good, keep positive, Gwen x
