Hi guys,
Been in and out of hospital now with a really sick mum. Before she was admitted she was severely wheezing, couldn't breathe and basically not carrying on with everyday living. Fast forward 3 days, she ended up in an acute assessment ward having a CT scan. That sadly showed up a large mass on the top of her lung and her chest, its currently pressing on her airway causing the breathing problem.
Biopsy was on Monday, they have decided to put a stent in her airway until we get the results back, that's when they can decide on treatment etc.
we don't know for sure yet but all points are leading to north from doctors and nurses which leads me to believe the result day will be the worst to come.
I've fully prepared myself for the worst, in the hope that anything other will be a relief.
Not sure what I am expecting from joining a forum either, but typing this has helped a great deal.
For everyone that's experiencing this, i send you nothing but hope, positivity, love, support and friendship.
For now, I will retire back to my sleepless bed in hope that we receive the results tomorrow, or maybe next week.
Hi Kara128 and a warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis. A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type and support challenges can help a lot.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you consider joining and posting in our dedicated Lung Cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.
It will be an emotional time supporting your mum so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions……. you may also benefit from joining our Carers only support group where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.
To connect in with the groups click on the “Bold Italic Links” I have created above then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)
When you are ready you can put up your own post by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title.
You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
The Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.
We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and provide support from all the family.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
I’m so sorry. Sending you love and wishing upon wishing that she doesn’t have cancer
Hi Kara,
How is your Mum doing now? Has she had her results yet?
My mum was diagnosed with incurable but treatable lung cancer 5 weeks ago and has just started treatment. She also was wheezing and very breathless doing the most simple things but she had a stent ditted in her lung airway and it has made a huge difference. The wheezing is gone and although gettingnup stairs etc is a bit of a struggle still, thats more due to poor mobility then breathlessness. Overall the stent has been a great sucess and made a lot of positive difference for Mum xx
Thinking of you and your Mum xx
Hi Sade,
We had the results Friday. The same as your mum actually, incurable but treatable. There was mention of a stent in the airway but the doctors decided she didn’t need it and have prescribed some additional steroids.
After a good pep talk from the doctors she’s so much brighter and is getting about a lot more without fear.
Next appointment is with oncology in 10 days to discuss treatment and if she’s well enough to receive it yet.
It’s been bittersweet news but I think we are all just glad she’s starting to get back to her normal self.
Thinking of you and your mum also. Thank you so much for reaching out ️ xx
Unfortunately it is, it’s incurable but treatable. Thank you for your kind words xx
That seems to the common phrase "imcurable but treatable" Thats good your mums not needed the stent but if she dies in future, try not to worry. It seemed a pretty straighforward procedure and Mum was in and out within a few hours.
For me, I almost felt better once we had the diagnosis. Even though I was devastated, I think knowing what you are dealing is half the battle and we can face it better.
I think cancer treatment has come on so much and although Mum wont ever be cancer free, I am hopefully her treatment will give her a better quality of life and prolong her life. However long that may be. I immediately thought cancer = imminent death, but it is not always the case. More so now than ever.
Please feel free to message me anytime, I do find talking on here has really helped me so far x
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
