Husband has recently been diagnosed with cancer 6 weeks ago & awaiting surgery

I am finding it increasingly overwhelming to help him through this. He constantly needs reassurance on when to take meds & how much - I hate to see the way sun he is going through

recently he seems to awake very confused in the night- not sure if this is the medication- on codeine for pain relief. It really worries me

  • Hi  the cancer journey can be full of twists and turns in the road as there are many physical and emotional challenges that are often completely new and scary.

I have been on my cancer journey for over 24 years so have had a lot of treatment and because of this experienced the same challenges your husband is dealing with.

Navigating the cancer journey brings lots of uncertainty and stress so patients looking for continual reassurance is not surprising…… at times I was the same especially when I was on significant levels of medication, this combined with the negative cognitive effect that some pain meds had on me confusion and at times acting totally out of character ment that my wife had to do the thinking for me…… to this day over 7 years out from my last main treatment I still hear about ‘episodes’ that I have no recollection of happening.

Caring for someone on the cancer rollercoaster can be such a challenging, stressful and even lonely time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' cancer type and support challenges can help a lot.

I see you have posted in our Soft tissue sarcomas support group, but when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your husband you may also benefit from joining our general Carers only support group where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

As always if you are in any way concerned about your husband you should call your husbands (and yours) key SCN as they are there us help you out.

Do remember that the Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information or just a listening ear ((hugs))
