COVID & Cancer

Hi team - I have just moved back home with my parent who had been diagnosed with GBM cancer.

I still go into the office from time to time and visit my boyfriend who lives in the city. My mom's diagnosis is rather new, and I am just now thinking through the following - I am worried to pass along COVID or any kind of flu/illness to my parent as the doctor mentions it can be quite dangerous for her to contract something. I am vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 (so is she and most of those around me) but people are still getting it semi-frequently.

Are you all wearing masks in public places? Indoor, or outdoor too? Has anyone thought through this as well? I have no issue with wearing a mask but my mom is still fairly active and I'd hate to have my face covered up around her 100% of the time. Just feels sad. Is it helpful to just wear one when out in public? Appreciate all thoughts and of course no judgement on where anyone stands here.

  • Hi

It's natural to want to do all you can to protect someone from catching unwanted illnesses when they are dealing with cancer. While I was undergoing treatment for breast cancer last year I wore a mask in all public places and also kept away from anyone who had a cold, etc.

I can see that you've joined the GBM group and I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also post this there, as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer. You'll then be able to find out how they're trying to protect themselves from unwanted illness.

It would be great if you could pop something about your parent's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
