Evening, is there a good place to start to find local support, maybe Macmillan locally.

My father has stage 4 kidney cancer which has spread everywhere.

We want to be connected to Macmillan locally.

My parents live in Shirley, Solihull. I have called MacMillan twice, but they say we need to connect locally.

My parents GP is about as much use as a chocolate tea pot.

I am in London visiting every weekend (I have a young family and work full time.)

We are a resourceful family BUT need some help and support.

Any advice or tips! much love. xx

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your father has been diagnosed with kidney cancer which has spread to other areas of his body.

As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups so if you can't find a local group you could join the kidney cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences around kidney cancer and it's treatment. Another group that you might benefit from joining is the family and friends group, which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions with others who have a loved one living with cancer.

To join these groups, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

To see what support is available both where you and your parents live, click here which will take you to 'In Your Area'. This is an online directory of cancer support services, self-help and support groups which you can use to find information and support centres, practical health and support groups.

You say that you have phoned Macmillan twice but been told that "we need to connect locally". I find that very strange as the nurses and advisors on the Macmillan Support Line are available to everyone, no matter where they live. Can I suggest that you report this lack of help to community@macmillan.org.uk so that this can be investigated further.

It would be great if you could pop something about your father's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
