My mum found out 3 weeks ago she has stage 3 lung cancer. 2 weeks ago she’s was rushed in to hospital with pneumonia, it was very touch and go if she would survive as they discovered that her cancer was very aggressive and she had a collapsed lung. Thankfully mum recovered from the pneumonia and has been sent home under palliative care. We haven’t seen the oncologist yet as this has happened so very quickly. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions and I’m absolutely drained, overwhelmed and heartbroken. I’ve had 2 weeks off work and they haven’t pressured me but I just want to be with my mum. I feel awful about not being at work. What are other peoples experiences dealing with work. I still need my job and can’t afford to have time off unpaid but my job entails dealing with customers and I’m just not in the right head space.
Hi Peach1 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and I know what a worrying time this will be for you.
As the online community is divided up into different support groups, I'm going to recommend that you also join the family and friends group as you'll then connect directly with others who have loved one living with cancer.
To join just click on the link I've created which will take you directly to this group. Once you've joined you can then start a new post asking what others have done about work when in a similar situation.
You might also find this booklet from Macmillan entitled Questions for Carers to Ask About Work and Cancer helpful to have a look through.
It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
