Supporting a friend whose husband has cancer

Hi all. My best friend's husband recently found out he has cancer. Stage 4 colon that has spread to his liver. There are so many tumours in his liver that there is nothing they can do about it. He will just be on chemo to extend his life a little. They have a 3 year old daughter and my friend is understandably beside herself. I don't know how to help her. I want to do everything for her, but there's nothing for me to do. What can I do? Expenses are covered by his family, childcare by her family. I've been trying to just keep it real, be her little slice of normality, but I just wish I could do more. I wish I could fix it all for her. How can I help her? My heart is broken for her, it really is.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your best friend's husband has recently found out that he has incurable colon cancer. It must have been a tremendous shock to you all.

It's great that you want to do all you can to help your friend and I'm going to suggest that you join and post in the supporting someone with incurable cancer group so that you can see how other people have supported their friends.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on reply.

You might also like to take a look at this information from Macmillan about supporting my friend with cancer. You say that expenses are covered by his family and childcare by her family and there's nothing for you to do but maybe all you need to do is to continue to be her friend, listen to her when she wants to rant and rave about the injustice of it all, take her out if she wants to or just sit and talk.

    Sending virtual (((hugs)))
