Hello,
My precious precious mum was diagnosed with cancer today.
They know its in her bones, lymph nodes and her thyroid is enlarged.
She's had an ultrasound of her abdomen which was inconclusive, a ct scan and a sample of the fluid in her lung.
They have arranged an mri scan for next thursday as they can't tell where her cancer is from.
How can that be ?
Her ca-125 levels are elevated which is why they referred her for tests, but surely ovarian cancer would have shown up on the ct scan ?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, it just doesn't make sense as I would have thought it would have shown something. How could it have spread to her bones but not show anywhere ?
Will she ever find out do you think ?
Hi rugratsgrandma so sorry to hear about your mum.
A cancer diagnosis journey can be such a challenging and stressful time and yes there are times when the primary site is not found.
The Community is actually divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our supportive Unknown primary cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis and treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.
If you'd like to connect in with a group click on the (Bold) Group Link I have created above. Once the group page opens click on the black banner that says [click to join] at the bottom, or the [Join] button under "Group tools."
You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘new post’ by clicking in the box near the top right with + New or + (Depending on the device you are using) and you are ready to go. You could copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
Remember the Macmillan Support Line is open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00.
Please do get back to me if you need further help.
