any advice on coping with ureteric stent?

I recently had a ureteric stent fitted in December (cancer pressing against the tube between my kidney and bladder). It has been fine until suddenly this week it has become so uncomfortable.

I already spoke to my consultant about it, seems it is normal side effects I am having. Essentially I was told to drink more water as the more full my bladder, the less likely the stent will irritate it. But I am constantly running to the loo for trickles of blood and it is just a nightmare!

I just wondered if anyone has coped with it and had any tips!

  • Hi  as you are waiting to get any reply’s I thought that you may want to put ‘ureteric stent’ into the community search tool  Mag  linear the top.

Selects ‘anywhere’ once you hit the search and this will bring up all the older posts on the site and as always you can hit reply to any post and see if the members is still using the site.

  • Hello. I was fitted with a uretal Stent for the same reason as you. I experienced some initial discomfort twitches of pain. I also was advised to drink plenty of water to clear any bleeding. The Stent can irritate the lining of the bladder and the kidney. This is what causes the appearance of blood in the urine. If you pass blood clots you need to contact the hospital. I found there was more blood if I did heavy lifting or was more active. You might find lying on the opposite side from Stent helps. But the major thing is drink lots of water. This flushes out blood. You will visit loo more often but it's to be expected. The pink wee will get less. Hope this helps. Xx
