Sickness after chemotherapy

Hi all,

My step dad has tonsil cancer and is having radiotherapy every day alongside some chemotherapy. Today he had his second batch of chemo and has been throwing up for about 6 hours non stop. He can’t keep anything down, not even anti sickness medication. Is this normal? When should we be worried about him having no fluid at all? And how long will this intense sickness last?

Thank you so much for your help in advance,

A very lost and worried daughter

  • Hi  and see it’s your first post so welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your dad.

Unfortunately for some, this can be normal. You do need to contact his clinical team and make them aware as there are a number of different anti-sickness meds. My meds changed throughout my treatments as my body was continually reacting differently.

A cancer diagnosis in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but I do hope you will find the Community a safe place to get support and to ask your questions.

The Community is divided into support groups (discussion rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our supportive Head and neck cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis and treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same journey.

  • The same thing happened to me.  We had to contact the clinical team and they had me come in 2 days in a row for just iv fluids and nausea.  Then when I had to do my next 2 rounds they were proactive and planned on having me come in for the same treatment each time and I never got ill after that
