Hi all,

Just looking for some advice,  my husband is Scottish and after uni we moved to my hometown in Northern Ireland 4 years ago. My husband was diagnosed within 2 months of moving to my home with incurable bowel cancer. Since then he's been on Three different types of chemo and a clinical trial. We're thinking now's the time that we move back to Scotland so he can see his family more.

He has one more chemo to go on this one and I would like to move before he starts any more treatment.

My question is has anyone done this before or has the information on if it's okay to move and how quickly can they get him registered on the Scottish health care system again..would this cause any delays or problems.

Another question would be how does transferring his benefits happen and.would their be a delay, I work full time but we still need his pip and Esa to stay afloat.

Any advice or even where to go to ask for advice would be great!.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Community.

I think great care will be needed to ensure that he is registered with a GP surgery, that his care is being picked up by the cancer unit he going to have treatment at and that his notes are safely transferred.

In theory his benefits should be ok but there is always a chance of a break down in communications.

You may want to call the Macmillan Support Line open from 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00 where you can talk with someone about the practical information and benefits/financial guidance.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.
