'Private Number' Yikes!

Anybody else dread seeing those two words come up on their phone?

When you have cancer, 'private number' or 'number witheld'  usually means someone Medical is trying to reach you.

And its rarely with good news!

In  my case, its usually my Oncologist calling to say there's a problem with my blood test results and that my treatment needs to be put on hold while they get the levels right.

I'm always torn between wanting to ignore it and knowing I have to take the call in case it's something really important

Anybody else feel this way? X

  • I am exactly the same, although my phone now tells me it’s clatterbridge ringing me lol x

  • Yes!   You know you have to answer it! X

  • Always Harebelle, always. I've got a few numbers named (but unknown numbers ) but the medical staff always confuse me by using other ones too! X

  • I know the feeling x

  • Mine has always shown it’s the QE hospital

I never answer withheld numbers though

  • Our phone asks the call to state their name and purpose of call before ring us this gives us the option to reject, accept once, accept always, keeps the rubbish away

  • Yeah, but you know you want to know, really!  Or sometimes mine is the oncologist wanting to do a F2F appt over the phone.

The numbers are sometimes the STD code where my onco is based, or 0800 or very occasionally it's "private number".  This is strange because my onco tells me it will come through as "private number".  As he's not a telephony technology guru I just accept he's talking rubbish (on this occasion) lol

They make sure they never phone you on a mobile though huh

  • Hi Mmum, so true, a bit like GP they text you to ring them, as they have our number why not ring us first, just passing the cost on to the patient's, who will be 15 in the Q.

  • Very annoying when you get private numbers I tend to block them but if it's medical its usually 08000
