Hi, my dad has stage 4 lung cancer which has spread to his bones, he has recently been in and out of hospital with chest infections, his mobility is very bad, he uses a wheelchair and a zimmerframe. He took a turn for the worse last week and was admitted into a hospice. While he was in there they started him on dexamethasone, a steroid for 5 days, the difference in him has been unbelievable, he is eating again, he is more himself and just seems so much better, they said they are slowly going to reduce tge amount of steroids over the next few days. Does anyone know how quickly these wear off and how soon he will deteriorate?
Hi Belle1975 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
That's great to read that your dad has improved immensely since being prescribed steroids.
As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups so I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join and post this question in the lung cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as your dad.
If this is something that you'd like to do just click on the link I've provided which will take you directly to the group. You can then join and start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with exiting conversations by clicking on 'reply.
When you feel up to it, it would be great if you could pop something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hi! Some hospices use Dexamethasone to make a person’s passing less painful and give them more possibilities to spend time with their family and friends. It’s hard to tell how long it will take, but it’s usually several weeks’ time. You should better discuss it with your doctor. The caring personnel at a hospice might use this drug up to a person’s passing which might even make the passing seem unexpected and shocking. There are certain side effects because it’s still a steroid like Dianabol, but they are usually not observed in patients whose lifespan is measured in days or weeks.
