Hello

Just a quick question, my wife has Squamus in her Lungs. Her only option is to have chemo. Everywhere I've seen T.V. etc. they say "the sooner cancer is detected --the better chance of a cure". My wife does not fall into this as hers is incurable it being a secondary cancer afer it being treated earlier with Radium & pronounced Cured?

Still, my question is it the norm for patients to have to wait 56 days from detection to actually start treatment?

Looking on the internet it says Sqaumus doubles in size every 70 days? With her being given 6-12 months to live 57 days seems a big chunk out of this?

Thanks.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that your wife has been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in her lungs and that her only option is to have chemotherapy.

Having a different type of cancer to your wife I don't know if SCC does double in size every 70 days as you say, but posting this question in the lung cancer group might shed some light on this.

As for current targets for treating cancer in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland they are:

    • no more than 2 months (62 days) wait between the date the hospital receives an urgent referral for suspected cancer and the start of treatment
    • no more than 31 days wait between the meeting at which you and your doctor agree the treatment plan and the start of treatment

You can read more about cancer waiting times in this link from Cancer Research UK.

It would be great if you could pop something about your wife's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

I hope your wife doesn't have too much longer to wait.

  • Thanks latchbrook & for the advice. I was just wondering as her 6-12 months we were told by the Oncologist is not an approx. more certain? & 2 months of waiting for treatment to start seems a big chunk of wasted time to me? I could be wrong & probably am, even maybe overthinking things a little?

With this wait however, it does tend to make me think of all things even giving myself headaches at times? lol

Sorry to read your Profile seems you've been through the mill yourself. Sincerley wish you all the very best & that you conquer what is a horrible disease.

    Again Many Thanks

  • I can see why you'd be worried about the delay when your wife has been given a 6-12 month prognosis . However, try to remember that it's only a best guess based on previous people and your wife is an individual. There are plenty of people in the community who will have told you that they've gone way past their "sell buy date" as they like to refer to their prognosis as.

  • Thanks again we were told what you say from a Consultant but at the Christie I asked the Oncologist & her reply was a definite No! In my wife's case she said it was all we could expect which at the time knocked us both for six.
