Hi my husband has just been diagnosed with lung cancer this week and we are see the oncologist on Tuesday but we don’t know what to expect and was wondering if we could apply for PIP

  • Yes u can but make sure your prepared for when they ring u tell them.the bad days and that you say u do everything for your husband get letters off gp and cancer doctor .the first lady that rang me was horrible more like a crown court judge ha ha.must tell you tho it takes ages I've been assessed again by phone and up to now it has taken 7 montn should hear there decision by the end of month good luck x

  • Thank you. Hope you get a decision soon.

  • Hi yes you can apply

it’s a horrible process though so be warned, I can barely stand from my tumour and treatment and it is still a long process. I have only recently heard back from them

i’ll just add that Macmillan do offer help with the forms and I started this process however I found the forms ok doing them myself (it was the assessment appointment that was horrible) but my job involves forms all the time so if you are used to forms they are ok to do but help is there if you want it

I hope the oncologist appointment yesterday went ok x

  • I went to Macmillan to ask them to assist me filling out the forms.  They were really helpful and knew how to phrase things but they also indicated that it was not unreasonable to consider that my disease might kill me within six months and I received an automatic award without the need for an interview.

They have now completed this form for me twice and I received the award with no issue.  It is worth talking to them before attempting to complete it yourself.  If you do not have access to a Macmillan nurse or office if you ring the helpline they will advise you how to access support

Even if you have already sent off the form it is probably worth talking to them.

    All the best

  • Please contact either MacMillan or your local Maggie’s Centre as they have people who will meet up with you and complete the paperwork for/with you.  This is a challenging time for you and your husband and they will help you. Don’t be shy to ask them how they can help.

Sending prayers and best wishes to you both

  • Macmillan can help you with this. Be sure to reach out to them for assistance. They have numbers you can use to get in touch or you can do an online chat. Really great service.

I hope you can get some support for you both with this.
