Hi all. I just got my breast cancer diagnosis yesterday - still can’t believe it, and since I already suffer from anxiety it hit me like a train when I woke up and ‘remembered’ this morning. All the positives I was told have got out the window and all I can think is disaster and worst case, which my anxiety does. Obviously no one is thrilled when they are diagnosed, but it would help to know I’m normal. How did you feel at first? Is it normal to feel floored and really scared? It may seem a silly question but it would help to know. Thanks.

  • Hi PollyS,It’s normal to feel a whole range of emotions when you are first diagnosed with cancer. It is a shock and it takes time to adjust to the new situation. There is lots of support from the lovely ladies and men in the breast cancer group.I think that would be a good group for you to join as you will get a warm welcome.I had bladder cancer and remember feeling absolutely terrified at the thought of major surgery.Your mind does go into overdrive and imagines the worst but these fears tend to lessen once you have your treatment plan.Talking with other people with the same type of cancer really helps to relieve the anxiety. It all feels overwhelming at first.I hope you have got supportive family and friends ? Love and best wishes Jane x

  • Thank you. That does help.

  • You are welcome and I’m so sorry you have been diagnosed. It will get less scary.Joining the Macmillan community was really helpful for me and I hope it will be the same for you.Love and best wishes Jane x
