I have a hard to reach tumour in my pelvis. To operate would damage the nerves to my leg but the alternative is death. I'm 42 and although I've been in treatment for a couple of years I'm still relatively strong. I would rather lose the use of my leg than my life. Why am I unable to make this decision within the NHS?
My oncologist is very brusque and I feel bulldozed into the path she has chosen for me. There is no discussion of any alternatives. Perhaps there are none, but I would like to speak to a doctor outside the NHS to understand whether this is a cost thing or whether this really is the end of the road.
Does anyone have any experience with working with doctors on a private basis or know where to start with getting a private second opinion?
Unfortunately, while I have no end of respect for the hard-working doctors, nurses and support staff, over the last 2 years I have grown to hate the NHS as an organisation with its endless bureaucracy, delays and mistakes.
Hi TD2000
I don't have any experience with getting a second opinion but this information might help you get started.
I did see a consultant privately when I was first concerned about an unusual lesion on my arm. In my case I just called the local private hospital and made an appointment to see one of the consultant dermatologists.
