Chemo and looking after children in the school summer holidays

Hello

In the last month I’ve been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. I haven’t got any treatment plan or any start dates. I had biopsies taken last week the won’t be reviewed this week because the results aren't back. I’ve probably a few more weeks finalising the treatment but I can see this happening throughout the school summer holidays.
We booked a holiday to Devon for two weeks in August before I knew about the tumour - the rest of the balance is due this Saturday and I don’t feel we will be able to go so will ask to transfer the booking and try for next year. That’s really sad as we were looking forward to it. I feel really guilty for my three children (12,10 and 7) about this obviously I can’t help having this and I need to get my treatment. I know treatments are sometimes Mon-Fri. Is there any chance we could do weekend breaks just to have some escape? I’m curious how other families have coped in this situation as I don’t know what to expect at all.  I worry about my children and my family and friends looking after the children. Are there any support groups or charities that might be able to support my family during the school holidays?

Thanks xxx

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that you've recently been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and it's natural that you've got lots of questions around treatment and whether you might be able to get away for a few days in between. I'm in a similar position in that I'm waiting for chemotherapy to begin for breast cancer and I'm also hoping to be well enough to get away in between treatments.

I can see that you're a member of the oesophageal cancer group and I think if you also post your question there you should get a response from others who can tell you what their treatment regimes were like.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment and I hope we can both get away for a few days in between.

  • Thank you for your quick response. Fingers crossed we can both get away. I’ve posted in the oesophageal cancer forum too. All the best  for your treatment xxx
