Apprehension about routine cancer screening tests

In the last two and a half years I have been diagnosed with and successfully treated for both non-Hodgkin lymphoma and primary lung cancer.

Partly due to having treatment and partly due to covid causing routine cancer screening programmes to be suspended, I am now overdue for a mammogram, a colonoscopy, and a skin cancer check.

I have booked the mammogram for early July but I'm finding it difficult to get around to organising the others, especially the colonoscopy.

Has anyone else found themselves dealing with this kind of reluctance following successful treatment?

  • Hi again …. I have no idea what the actual backlog in getting appointments is like in Australia where you stay is like but in the UK it’s a significant challenge at the moment.

It is very different across the various areas of the UK….. we call it a postcode lottery….. but things are slowly opening up but there is a massive backlog.

  • I could have had a mammogram within days, but I need a bit longer to mentally prepare.  I can probably get a booking for a skin cancer screening within a couple of weeks.

Waiting for a colonoscopy could well take the rest of the year.  It was typically months before covid and there's now a backlog.  I really need to at least set the wheels in motion but my last colonoscopy was a nasty experience and I'm fed up with feeling like cancer tests rule my life.

  • This is the post covid world……. colonoscopy is not a great experience Smirk
