Any military veterans received priority treatment for cancer on NHS?

Hi there, this is my first post on here.  I'm just looking for a bit of advice.

My partner has recently been diagnosed with renal cancer, he has a 15cm tumour on his right kidney and is awaiting an operation for it to be removed. He has already suffered delays in diagnosis by missed opportunities in the NHS to identify the cause of his symptoms. At his diagnosis appointment (19th May) he was told the operation would be 4-6 weeks. He had his pre op yesterday and was told by the nurse he was the highest priority so would get the op soon. She gave us the phone number for the waiting list, we called them and were told it would likely be mid to late July which would make it 8-10 weeks. He is suffering from quite severe symptoms and is deteriorating daily. He is 42 years old and ex army. He is slim, active (normally), never smoked and only drinks occasionally and socially. He does not fit the usual risk groups for this illness. He does however suffer from PTSD and anxiety/ panic attacks which came from his time in the military. I strongly believe the stress of his mental health has been the main contributing factor in him developing cancer. As such, I was wondering if he would be eligible for priority for his operation with him being a veteran.  I wondered if anyone else had any experience of this?

Thanks

  • Indiegal, I've not had personal experience of this situation but just wanted to say is it worth  contacting your husband's local veterans group for info?  The British Royal Legion too may know.  Any contact with previous senior staff from his regiment perhaps?

He certainly deserves priority treatment in this instance especially with his diagnosis of PTSD and anxiety.  Are his surgeons aware of his PTSD?  Are there such things as army hospitals with specialist surgeons to do the op?  If he is having any support for his mental health then could they find out?

Hassle his GP to push the surgeon for an early date maybe and make sure that his GP knows he is deteriorating mentally too.

I really feel for you in this situation hon, it must be heartbreaking for you too.  Have you joined the forum for partners of people with cancer as they can support you (so you can support him).

    Good luck xx

  • Hi, I hope your husband has managed to jump up the list hon and has had his surgery. X

  • Hi Allotment lover. Sorry for the delay in responding but you'll probably know how crazy life is these days. Thanks for your response and we'll wishes. So we've still not got a date for surgery. I tried contacting pals at the hospital but they've been no use thus far. Tried Combat Stress who he's been receiving counselling from lately, said they can't do anything to assist. We've been told that his surgery will take place at Leeds now so we're going to just hound them. He's deteriorating daily and it's heartbreaking to witness. Just feels like he's dying before my eyes.

  • I am a veteran and I never received anything extra or priority from anyone in forty years least of all from the NHS.

  • He didnt get priority due to this but apparently he was high priority on medical grounds. It goes 1. Medical priority/urgency 2. Veterans. 3. General waiting list.

  • Hi Allotment lover. Surgery went ahead a month ago, he was lucky and got offered a cancellation. He felt 100% better when he woke up from the operation. They removed his right kidney, the 15cm tumour, lymph nodes and adrenal gland. Just had follow up appointment with surgeon today and despite its size it hadn't spread outside the kidney and tumour. The gland and nodes turned out to be healthy. He doesn't need any follow up treatment just ct scans to keep an eye. We feel so fortunate. He's 43 and I'm 38 and it feels like we can get back to living our lives xx

  • So glad that it all went so well and that things are on the up for both of you. It should be plain sailing from here !

  • Oh wow that's the best news hon.  I'm so glad he's feeling better and that the cancer was contained and hadn't reached his lymph nodes.  Woohoo I'm happy for all of you and your family.  Fantastic and thanks for letting me know, I hadn't forgotten about you both just have no wish to to be chasing people for news, that would make me a stalker!

It's always great to hear positive news. Start re-living your "new normal" life with gusto, love and laughter. Xxx
