Hi everybody….. my partner was admitted to hospital last September and is still in their now. What he went in for was a suspected twisted colon but since he has had a bowel dissection, half his stomach removed and numerous treatments. They found cancer in his bowel and stomach and it has now spread to his liver, chest, lymph nodes and the back of his neck. He is strong but the cancer is aggressive. Anyway I’m a fortnight he is getting discharged as he is now palliative care and been told to enjoy the time he has. He wants me to be his carer which I agree to as I’m a nurse but I’m scared that I won’t be able to cope with watching the man I love deteriorate in front of me and be able to fulfill his needs. He doesn’t want to go in a hospice as we have had so much time apart and just wondering if I will be able to get assistance if needed at home when the time comes xx
Hi Scarytimes and a warm welcome to the online community
I'm sorry to read about your partner's prognosis and it's natural to wonder how you'll cope and what will happen in the days ahead.
As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups so I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join and post in the supporting someone with incurable cancer group as this will give you the opportunity to connect with other carers, friends and families of people with a terminal diagnosis. There you can discuss your emotions as well as practical issues about palliative care..
To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could pop something about your partner's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
