Hi everyone. My names Hannah and I got diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer in august last year. I’m only 25 and it’s been a real shock. I’m having treatment every 2 weeks and my veins are so bad that when they are doing bloods then cannula two days later it’ always takes at least 2 attempts, and today took 3 nurses with 6 attempts:/ I’m debating whether to get a central line which has been mentioned. I just wanted to see if anyone has one or has debated having one, I’m just worried about it. Thank you
Hi Hannah1996, with the amount of treatment you are having a PICC or Central Line is the way to go.
I am a blood cancer patient so we tend to get a massive amount of chemo so I was given no choice and had a Double Lumen PICC line put in for my main 6 cycles 750hrs of chemo. Then a few months later I had a Central Line put in - one each of my two Stem Cell Transplants.
I had no problems with them, the PICC was put in in about 30mins...... the Central Line is more involved so takes longer....... it cuts out the need for Cannulas. The lines are looked after by your team or when I was not at clinic a district nurse came in past the house weekly to flush them and put on new dressings ((hugs))
Thank you. What is the difference between a central line and a picc line?
