My nana has recently been feeling unwell (already has pulmonary fibrosis) , she has cough/ short of breath/ wheezing/ tiredness.
she was sent for a scan a few weeks ago and blood tests which showed high ESR. They said her lungs showed "lumps and bumps" and mediastinal lymph nodes. My nana was referred to a hematologist but when I google her name it says cancer specialist. She also received a letter to take to her blood tests which has the words" "macmillian out patients" and said to exclude haematological malignancy.
Nana had her blood tests last Tuesday and her scan on Friday of all her lymph nodes from neck to pelvis. Today she received a letter already to say the consultant wants to speak to her 2 weeks today. So around the 2 week mark receiving resukrs which I have read is quite normal even if it is cancer.
my question is - would they say bad news such as cancer over the phone? I have read other forums on here where people have received bad news over the phone.
the waiting is so horrible and stressful :(
I received a letter to say I had mass on kidney two weeks later I had phone call to say I had tumour and it was cancer also said it was on both my lungs I was deverstated then when I went to cancer centre in Liverpool he disagreed with original phone call saying it was slightly on my lung had kidney removed last October its awful getting letter or phone call
I’m so sorry. I couldn’t imagine being told this over the phone. Stay strong you can fight this ️
I’m so so sorry. The worst news should be in person in my opinion. Very sorry. I hope you are recovering and staying strong ️
My gynae surgeon rang me to tell me that I had a cancerous fibroid. After my hysterectomy she came to see me and told me that there was no cancer after all. I was so relieved for ten days then the specialist gynae nurse rang me to say it was leiomyosarcoma which is a very rare, very aggressive cancer and I was being referred to the Christie hospital in Manchester. I'm glad that I am under a sarcoma team at Christie as I had completely lost faith in our local hospital.
My experience is a few years ago now but still makes me cross. I got an unexpected and unclear letter from the hospital so I rang to ask for information. A nurse phoned me back and told me in a very off-hand manner that I had cancer and needed to come in within 2 weeks for surgery. I did see her once when I attended out-patients and she more or less tried to hide behind a door as I walked past so I think she may have had a telling off!
PS I meant to add that I hope this uncaring behaviour doesn't happen now. Obviously she had to answer my question, but she could have tried to sound a bit more concerned when she did it. She spoke as if I'd rung up to see if a parcel had arrived or something.
A few years ago I was being investigated for extreme anaemia. I went to the GP to discuss my blood results. It was a locum GP who just very casually said that I had myloma. I was so shocked and to be honest I started to cry. She ignored my crying and just said book a blood test and come back to see me in a month. She let me leave the health centre in bits. She showed no compassion or empathy. I arranged to see my regular GP who told me that I didn't have myloma which was confirmed by a special blood test. I complained about the locum as I wouldn't want her putting another patient through her poor bedside manner. The surgery manager was very proactive and the locum has never worked at the medical practice since.
