Hey everyone,
I'd really appreciate some support and guidance as I am feeling very worried about my biopsy results which have been delayed.
I had keyhole surgery on 31st July (over 4 weeks ago) to remove a large 10cmx7cm cyst/adenoma. The initial diagnosis was unlcear as to whether the mass was a cyst or a tumour/adenoma.
I had slightly raised LDH levels on my blood test too which hasn't particularly been expalined to me in much detail.
When I was discharged from the hopsital after my surgery I was told I would recieve my reusults within 3 weeks via a letter in the post.
4 weeks on I have called the hopsital twice (once today and once last week) to be told my results have to be reviewed by the multidisiplinary team which was meant to happen last Friday (27th aug) but has been deyed to Fri this week.
Has anyone else been through a similar process? I am extremely anxious as I haven't had much explained to me and given that I was told I would recieve the results in the post in 3 weeks has skyrocketed the anxiety as now I naturually assume there wouldn't be anything to discuss if everything was okay, so I'd be very grateful for sharing of similar experiences for reassurance/additonal info.
Thank you all so much in advance!
Hi and welcome to the online community
I think just about everyone in this community will agree with you that waiting for results is horrible.
As you know the online community is divided up into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you also join and post in the ovarian cancer group. This isn't because I think you have cancer but, as you mentioned the possibility that it is an ovarian cyst, you should find others in the group who will have been through a similar diagnosis process.
To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
I'll be keeping everything crossed that it's benign.
x
Hi worriedwoman21, I am sorry to hear that you are extremely anxious, but also wanted to say that anxiety waiting for results is very natural. Six years ago I had a one week stay in hospital then was discharged home awaiting biopsy results. While I was in hospital a lovely Macmillan nurse came to see me for a few minutes every day to see how I was doing anxiety wise, this was because I’d been admitted because I felt unwell and had abdominal lumps which a CT scan showed to be many enlarged lymph nodes in my pelvic and abdominal region. A visit by round doctors and student doctors mentioned possible lymphoma hence as they knew I had heard that a Macmillan nurse came to see me, her advice was not to google Lymphoma as there were so many different types and it was best to just try and distract myself until the results were ready. For me the advice was good, I didn’t google and didn’t come to this site until a diagnosis was made, in fact I was diagnosed with melanoma in my lymph nodes.
I imagine that you think you might either have a cyst that has already been removed or as you are here some kind of cancer perhaps ovarian? Which I have no experience of. The people who do have can be found in the group Ovarian cancer forum, but the people who thought they might have and didn’t will no longer be on the Macmillan site I would imagine. There is the equivalent of my lovely Macmillan nurse who visited me to keep me calm, and that’s on the Macmillan Support line 0808 808 0000, either and information support officer will be on that number from 8am to 8pm each day or they can put you through to a nurse if they can better answer your questions.
The time that they estimated that my results would be ready was just that an estimate and results always go to an MDT (multidisciplinary team meeting) for discussion in my case it would have representatives from nurses, surgeons, oncologist, radiographers, and perhaps others medical professionals if they are useful. My MDT always meets on a Monday and my oncology team always has their appointments on a Wednesday. I have scans every 3 months and during coronavirus times they have not always been done to time so the delay in your results could just be a staffing issue. It is best to have results in a meeting after an MDT so that if there is any bad news there is some good news as well about what treatment plan is needed. 6;years on I’m still having scans and I’m facing a potential change in treatment, I have to wait for scans and wait for results then wait for treatment to start, so coping with these waiting periods is the most useful skill in all. My advise then is to put as much energy as you can into staying healthy in body and mind during any waiting period, and most people on here will identify with that and will be able to share their coping mechanisms.
I’m hoping some of this makes sense to you and is useful.
Take care KT
