Publishing Cancer Stories . Books

Even before being released from hospital I was considering writing a book / booklet on my experiences to help raise awareness of what I experienced and gain some income too. I am actually a writer, with some poetry, short stories and a study of British pub signs to my name (none of them generating J K Rowling levels of income and fame sadly).

Looking at the health market here is very little by way of cancer patient autobiography being sold. Life stories are only easy to sell for celebrities, many of who hire ghost writers.

There is a lot of self-published and vanity writing and lots on blogs, websites and of course, forums like this but it would be great to keep abreast of current cancer related literature and its mainstream publishers too.

I am like you . I want to join you .let’s try and do this .There’s nothing really on a lot of areas with books about cancer and sufferers and where to go for support and apart from joining forums there’s really nothing available to read about feelings or the journey with regards to where support lies in U.K.

there’s ‘stories ‘ about peoples journeys but that’s about it .

mum wondering if Macmillan could help in this field or do we do it ourselves ??

  • This is a good idea.  Everyone experiences the NHS cancer offering differently.  Some approaches work well on a few limited personality types.  I am frequently left thinking that the support services need ears and feedback.  One size doesn't fit all.

I started reading this: "The emperor of all Maladies" Siddhartha Mukherjee.  It was recommended.  People with cancer had enjoyed it.  I enjoyed chapter 1-3 but they didn't tell me what happened to the lady diagnosed with acute blood cancer on page 1 so I lost interest and only have the sample downloaded.
