PET scan delays

Hello,

my mum has been diagnosed with a carcinoid tumour in her lung. Before any operation, she needs a PET scan, which we were told would happen within a couple of weeks so the operation date could be planned mid august. We just had a call giving an appointment end of September. Waiting that long doesn’t seem to be a viable option, se we were wondering:

-what’s other’s experience in term of NHS PET scan? Are we likely to receive a sooner appointment due to cancellation? If so how quick is that usually?

-where would be the best place to get it done privately and quickly if needed?

All the best, thank you everyone

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with a tumour in her lung and, although I had a different type of cancer, I know what a worrying time this will be for all the family.

I don't have any experience with a PET scan so thought I'd suggest that you join and post this question in the lung cancer group. You'll then connect directly with others who have had a scan for the same type of cancer and they can let you know about their experiences with the NHS and privately.

If you'd like to do this clicking on the link I've created will take your straight there where you can join and post in the same way as you did here.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi ,

Im sorry to hear about your Mum and how anxious you seem. I haven’t had any private treatment but my Facebook page keep coming up with adds for private centres. Which are the best? Who knows but you want one that can liaise well with your own hospital, so perhaps your Mums  hospital is the best starting point. Your Mum will have a key worker probably a nurse. Mine when I was concerned about a surgery wait was able to give me the name of the surgeons private secretary as the same consultant did private and NHS work, so I was thinking that might be a route for information for you, to see if the private route is best for your Mum.

Latchbrook has suggested you join the lung cancer group, I think that’s a good idea, as they will be able to say how long they waited for their scans, and probably you will think of other questions. There is also a Family and friends - Discussion Forum, that might also help with support for you as it can be stressful when a loved one has cancer.

    Take care KT

Thank you for the advice, didn’t dare go on the lung cancer group as it’s quite a specific and rare  one so thought the experience might be different but it’s probably the best place.

    Thank you,

She hasn’t been assigned to a key worker yet but we are trying to get in touch and establish a more direct line to someone we could go to for such questions. It’s been really helpful to see that a lot of people seem to have that so we can request it rather than just wait.
    thank you and take care,

    Hello,

someone else a couple of days ago about going through a similar experience. The message has now disappeared (maybe it was deleted by the person, maybe my phone is just acting up) I just wanted to say thank you for the message that was really in depths. I read it to my mum and we both felt uplifted by it. It made us feel seen.

    thank you and take care,

  • Hi

I have just had a look in the lung cancer group and there are 18 previous posts which mention carcinoid tumours, so not lots compared to other types of lung cancers, but you may still be able to connect with others there.

    Hi Izzy,

I was facing a long wait for a PET scan on NHS.

I did have two booking (long story) - with the first one I got a cancellation that was quite quick.

No cancellation seemed forthcoming with the second one so I went private and had it within a week.

The London Clinic certainly do them.

    All the best,

    D
