My husband has just had his pet scan at UCLH today to try and locate where his cancer actually is, we didn't really get chance to speak to anyone after...any idea how long it will take for results???? Days/weeks???
Hi Bex1983,
As it is early in the diagnostic process this should be done comparatively quickly as they have guidelines as to how soon treatment decisions should be made.
I am not under UCLH and each hospital has it's own struggles and times vary between hospitals. If they are looking at a scan for a emergency they can do it immediately, initial cancer investigations are the next level of priority followed by routine scans. Availability of staff is one issue but how many emergencies they have can also have an impact.
Your liaison is your GP so it is probably worth giving them a call both to ensure that they know you have had a scan but also so that they can also start looking out for the results. They should have a better idea as to where you are in the timeline but also how promptly your results will be made known. Personally if I had not heard anything after about two weeks I would start ringing them up to chase it. Don't be put off doing so. Whilst the care is normally excellent the administration is cumbersome and it is not unknown for things to be forgotten or misplaced.
Just to let you know that you can also request a copy of your scan report (and any other test results or documentation so that you can go through it at your leisure and have time to try and understand the medical terminology. You can also request a copy of the scan itself (which you have to pay for) but to be honest it takes specially trained medical staff to interpret them and the only one I ever got it took me half an hour to work out which was my front and which was my back. I had no chance of being able to tell which blob was a tumour and which blob was an internal organ so I never bothered again.
I wish you and your husband all the best,
Gragon xx
