My mum has been told that her cancer has spread so they want to start Palliative Chemo as it cant be removed

what does this mean?

  • Hi

I have found this information from Macmillan for you which says "Chemotherapy may be used to treat cancer that has spread into surrounding areas (locally advanced cancer) or to other parts of the body (advanced or metastatic cancer). This may cure certain cancers, but more often the aim is to shrink and control a cancer to try to prolong life, and to relieve symptoms (palliative chemotherapy)."

If you need further information you could post your question in the ask a nurse section of the online community and one of the specialist cancer nurses will aim to respond within 3 working days.

Thank you so much for that, i had not seen that this can cure certain cancers, that gives me a bit more hope than i had. Purple heart

  • To find out if your mum's cancer can be cured it would be best to speak to her oncologist or cancer nurse specialist. Obviously you need your mum's permission to be able to do this.
